Companion Books - Why?
A smile is universal. It vanquishes barriers and ambraces us. Its message trancends language,
nationality and culture. Facts and suggestions presented with a smile overcome our instinctive or
acquired resistance and subtly engage our attention.
Seeing comes before words and it had long been recognised that visual images have a special
power to reinforce the impact and memorability of the written or spoken word.
The purpose of this gently humorous and highly visula series is self-help through self-enlightenment
and self-awareness in the context of that socially aware, responsive and supportive humanity of
which we are all a part.
Companion Book Treatment Guides
What is a laser? How does it work? What happens when I go to hospital? Are there different types
of laser? What do they do? What will happen after the laser treatment?
These are some of the questions that a child and his or her parents will ask.
Our full colour illustrated Companion Book gives children and parents the answers to these and
other questions in a simple and easy to understand form to make sure that they receive the
maximum treatment benefit from the new generation of skin lasers.
Puss Puss is a cat with a birthmark. Puss Puss is shown travelling through the 'adventure' of
laserland (treatment) and every picture is supported by simple, crisp and informative explanations of
each stage of treatment and aftercare. Text and illustrations have been endorsed by leading
international laser specialists.
This new 64 page book is an essential pocket companion for anyone about to have laser treatment.

The Mouse with Pink Ears
Price 2.50 UKP
The story of The Mouse with Pink Ears - told largely in pictures, and for all age groups - shows that
there are identifiable stages in the journey from real or perceived disadvantage to creative and
constructive personal and societal self-acceptance.
In a society swamped with cheap, high quality printing and 24 hour a day television the cult of
physical perfection impoverishes the self-esteem of all who cannot attain the ideal state. The story
of the mouse with pink ears is only too common. Yet, the pink-eared mouse syndrome can be
contained and overcome for there are two things that make social interaction possible and
worthwhile: hope and self-esteem. Find these and the rest becomes attainable.

Everyone who had worried about pimples or scars spoiling their looks should be sympathetic
towards others who are permanently affected by birthmarks and such disfigurements, but all too
often such people are objects of morbid curiosity, furtive looks, manifestations of pity, ridicule and
repulsion. Doreen Trust, author of 'Skin Deep: an Introduction to Skin Camouflage and Disfigurement
Therapy' was born with a birthmark on her face and has devoted most of her life to helping fellow
sufferers; in 1969 the DHSS suggested that she should start a 'Society of Skin Camouflage' and
this she did out of her own resources until a foundation was formed in January 1977 to raise funds.
As she says, it is ironic that help and research are endlessly forthcoming for self-applied abuses
like alcoholism, drug addiction and smoking, but so little is available to help the physically
disfigured (whether at birth, or by accident), many of whom are psychologically damaged too and,
for example, develop stoops or turned heads to conceal a misshapen face or body. Mrs Trust's
kindness has done much to restore confidence and good looks to afflicted people, and her book,
which is illustrated by Peter Trust, gives sensible advice, answers the questions likely to be asked,
and includes a touching collection of case histories.
