Peter Mayor Campbell was Sue's great-great-grandfather. He was born in Stevenston, Ayr, but his family moved to Newton-in-Makerfield in order to run the tilery there. He then joined the local printing works, McCorquodales, and became a composer of Bradshaw's railway guide. The family story goes that he travelled the world, composing railway timetables, but the account given in the introduction to John Lane's Book shows a slightly more mundane life. However he does seem to have been very active in local politics, managing to persuade the authorities to re-open the village school when it had closed due to lack of patronage. He also refers to his visits to several overseas locations in the books, and we are trying to find out more about his life and travels.
